U.S. Army Combat Hovercraft
"SK5" Gun Boat The SK-5 hovercraft was extensively
used in Vietnam for patrol and interdiction missions in the Mekong
Delta. This model duplicated the amphibious versatility of the
combat craft: it can travel over water, land, ice, or snow with
extreme ease. It is an exciting experience to fly and
maneuver. The driver will experience the exhilaration of flight
over land and water and simulated combat in an amphibious
environment. The model also lends itself to racing and land and
water slalom courses. The SK-5 model is readily convertible from
a full electric system to a gas powered system.

The Hovercraft model is
supported on an air cushion. As such there is ideally no contact
with any surface over which it travels; and all maneuvers, turns and
direction change have to be accomplished by the coordinated use of the
throttle and rudder. The unique nature of hovercraft flight lends
itself to exciting contests and races. This hovercraft model is a
powerful device. You must treat it with caution!
The vehicle travels over land or
water on a cushion of pressurized air. Air is forced under the
hull of the craft and is contained by a tube or "skirt" of flexible
material. A pocket or "plenum" of air is formed and the resulting
pressure pushes the hull of the hovercraft up and away from the surface
it is sitting on. Because the friction against the bottom of the
craft has been greatly reduced, less energy is required to move it over
the surface. This scientific principle is known as "surface
effect". The air cushion also gives you smoother ride over rough
surfaces. - The Radio Controlled Hovercraft listed on this page is
a scale models of a real hovercraft used today, not just a toy.
